Case Study: Creation of protective shield for bobcat
Our customers bought a Bobcat with a forestry head so they could clear the cedar and other trees off their ranch south of San Antonio. They want to have fields of natural grass instead of cedar on the ranch.
They were cautioned that the hydraulic lines could be cut by the forestry head when clearing cedar trees. After working for 3 hours a branch of the cedar was snagged and the lines were yanked off. With no pressure from the hydraulic lines, the bobcat was out of service. The Bobcat was fixed for $300 but they knew the problem had not gone away.
How to solve the problem?? Could something be welded to the bobcat? No, that wasn’t a solution. The wife remembered that Plastic Supply had repaired a basketball backboard with polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is a very, very strong plastic material. They came into the store and we assured them we could build a custom solution that would work.
We cut ½” thick polycarbonate that was 23” x 55 ½” with an additional strip glued in the middle for reinforcement. The customer drilled the holes for attaching the shield to the bobcat themselves so that the piece of polycarbonate was in front of the bobcat.
They have reported that the polycarbonate is working beautifully! Not only is the hydraulic line not being cut, they only blow off the debris every two hours of cutting the cedar. This was a major success!
